East Anglia's longest heritage railway linking the market towns of Wymondham and Dereham. The Railway also organises an extensive programme of special events each year ranging from a model rail exhibition to jazz trains and vintage transport events. The Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust was established in 1995 with the aim of buying and restoring the then-disused line between the Norfolk market towns of Dereham and Wymondham. We currently own 28km (17.5 miles) of track and trackbed through central Norfolk's most attractive countryside, making us one of the largest preserved railways in the UK today.
The line is operational between Dereham and Wymondham, and we own the disused northern section from Dereham as far as County School. The line is intact (although derelict) as far as North Elmham, and a further mile of track will need to be re-laid in order to reach County School.
Directions:
From Thetford: Keep on the A11 until you are almost past Wymondham. When you arrive at the B1172 junction, signed towards Wymondham and Dereham, leave the A11 and head towards the town centre. Carry on until you arrive at some traffic lights. Turn right at the lights and then immediately left, following the signs for the town centre. Go through the marketplace and then look for the war memorial on your left, after which you turn left into Vicar Street. Wymondham Abbey Station is on the right after about a quarter of a mile, shortly after you cross the river.
